OpenAI CEO Sam Altman published the latest blog post regarding video generation AI "Sora" titled "Sora update #1" on October 4, 2025. In it, Altman stated, "I want to express my respect for Japan's outstanding creative achievements," and commented, "I am amazed by the deep connection between users and Japanese content." He praised the presence of the Japanese creative scene in the use of Sora and indicated its strategic importance.

Sora Update #1 (Japanese Translation)

by Sam Altman

We are rapidly learning a lot from Sora's usage and receiving valuable feedback from users, rights holders, and other stakeholders. Of course, we spent a long time discussing things before the release, but now we are gaining practical learning beyond theory through the actual product. This time, I will tell you about two changes that we plan to implement in the future (and even more improvements are in store).

1. Strengthening Rights Holder Control in Character Generation

First, we will improve the character generation mechanism to allow rights holders to have more detailed control. This is similar to the "portrait rights opt-in model," but it allows for more advanced settings.

Many rights holders have high expectations for this new type of "interactive fan fiction." At the same time, we have received many requests to be able to specify "how their characters are used (or not used)."

We welcome the creation of different approaches for each creator. However, at the same time, we value maintaining fairness and ensuring that all rights holders can choose their own policies (and our goal is to make that mechanism as attractive as possible). Of course, unexpected cases may occur during generation. We will continue to improve iteratively to reduce such “edge cases” and optimize the entire system.

In particular, we sincerely respect the wonderful achievements of the Japanese creative field. We are also greatly impressed by the deep connection between users and Japanese content.

2. Towards a Sustainable Model for Video Generation

Next, we will develop a mechanism for monetizing video generation. The amount of video being generated per user far exceeds our expectations, and much of it is being created for very small communities.

Therefore, we are considering a mechanism to share some of the revenue generated with rights holders who allow users to generate characters. Finding the optimal form for this model will require trial and error. However, we plan to start working on it soon.

We believe that this new type of engagement will create value beyond just revenue sharing. Nevertheless, we want to make both aspects meaningful.

Future Changes and Speed

Sora will continue to evolve at a very rapid pace. This is reminiscent of the early days of ChatGPT. There will be good decisions and sometimes mistakes. Still, we will sincerely accept feedback from everyone and quickly fix any problems.

While trying various approaches, we plan to consistently reflect the learning we have gained from Sora throughout the product.

Strengthening Rights Holder Control in the Next Sora Update

It has become clear that two important changes will be made to Sora in the future. One is to allow copyright holders to have more detailed control over how their characters can be used in generative AI. The other is the introduction of a monetization model for video generation and revenue sharing with rights holders. Both of these are improvements based on feedback received from users and rights holders after the release, and are considered important steps in showing how Sora will evolve in the future.
